We the taxpayers of Lexington-Fayette Urban County need community access to Castlewood, Dunbar, Kenwick, William Wells Brown, and Charles Young community centers to provide our youth with safe, productive programming and to reduce the gun violence and delinquent behavior that results from youth being idle.

Community centers offer the ability to engage youth in sports, which according to studies will increase self-esteem, improve grades, and decrease negative behaviors. We believe that a city with record homicides and drug overdoses multiple years in a row should prioritize any and every effort to keep the citizens of this city safe. However, that doesn’t seem to be the primary concern of the current administration, so we the people are demanding that the LFUCG not only listen to our requests, but also implement the necessary policies immediately

Updates

June 13, 2021

I have spent my week meeting with neighborhood families who are tired of seeing our kids pushed into the streets because their local centers remain locked. The silence from the administration is deafening but we are not going anywhere.

June 13, 2021

Seeing this kind of momentum confirms that I am not the only one worried about our youth having nowhere safe to go. It is heartbreaking to watch our neighborhood kids struggle without these spaces, but your backing gives me hope that we can finally force a change.

Community center hours of operation are NOT sufficient. The centers closing at 6PM daily prevent MOST working citizens for being able to access the facility, and it is limiting the ability of children to participate in the activities scheduled for them from 9am-12pm.

Let the community in! No more sweetheart deals...build for the community and not 501(C)3 groups to solicit customers with tax paid buildings.

I reside in Atlanta Ga but I am originally from Lexington Ky and travel back often. Over the years I have seen the decline in the community as well as an increase in crime and violence. I believe that this is a direct correlation to the lack of support and involvement from the city for our community centers which are a staple in the city.

I grew up in Lexington and had access to Community Centers. I was fortunate to have a strong, involved family unit but many of my friends did not. These centers provided safe play and programs that made positive differences in many of their lives.

Reform the use and funding of public community centers. Explain the salaries paid for what?
