Hello East Village neighbors! What do Klaus Nomi, Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, David Spada, Marjorie Gross (Seinfeld producer) and many other artists and performers have in common? They got their start at Club 57, the basement artists club under the Polish church at 57 St Marks Place. Club 57 Artists Fund, a non-profit organization, is looking for signatures to co-name St Marks and Second Ave "Club 57 Way." If you live within a two block radius of the intersection, won't you please sign the petition? Please include your address with apartment number in the comments. You will not be contacted by anyone and your address will only be seen by the street co-naming committee.

We're looking for signatures from people who live on St Marks between 3rd and Ave A, E 6th, E 7th, E 9th, and E 10th between 1st and 2nd Ave. Please sign the petition if you live in this area and would like to see many East Village artists honored with a street sign. It would go under the St Marks sign, not replace it. If you'd like more information or would rather sign a paper petition, please email [email protected].

December 12, 2021

I have spent hours reading through your addresses and messages about why this history matters to you. It is moving to see how many of you still feel the spirit of these artists in our streets every day. I am currently organizing the paperwork to present our neighbors' requests to the committee.

Seeing the momentum building for the Club 57 sign feels like watching the neighborhood finally acknowledge the history that happened right under our feet. This movement proves that the creative spirit of the East Village is still very much alive and waiting to be honored.

I performed there, my friends performed there, I danced there night after night.

Before the old 1980s East Village completely vanishes, at least let some part of it be remembered with this street name!

Regrettably never went to Club 57, however I feel the artists and their friends deserve the recognition and what a wonderful permanent way to honour them.
