As you all might know, we have some serious safety issues on our beloved campus. There are professional thieves walking in and out of campus at night, stealing TVs, laptops, bikes and even break into rooms! It is generally advised by the porters not to walk anywhere by yourself after 7pm and to lock yourselves into your rooms at night.

But what can we do in order to prevent criminals to get on campus?
First of all, make sure that you close all doors and gates behind you! At the moment it is extremely easy for them to get into our colleges because we leave windows and doors wide open.

Second and this is what the petition is about:

Make Jacobs University close the front gate after 7pm, so only students with their transponders can get inside and hire more porters for the night shift!

Currently the front gate can not be closed because it is fixed by two pillars. We want Jacobs University to remove those pillars and shut the gate at night for everyone's safety.

I also talked to the porters today and was told that there are not enough of them on the night shift to have everything in control. Right now there are three porters responsible for our safety at night, but there have to be at least three more in order to be able to have an overview over the whole campus.

This is about a major security issue and it has to be solved before one of our students get raped.

I'm aware that closing the gate is not going to solve every problem there is on campus, but it would be a very important first step, so criminals can not get on campus by car.
