The Fire code was created to allow people to easily exit buildings in the event of a fire. These codes were created in a time when the words ACTIVE SHOOTER were never thought of. The fire code requires all locking devices to be mounted between 40” & 48” off the floor, and they are required to open with 1 motion. Although the code is great for allowing easy egress, this very code has in several school shootings allowed the shooter to “blow out the window, reach in and open the door”. In an active shooter scenario you want to SHELTER people from the violence. The Classroom Defender was designed to be out of reach from the shooter. While this device can possibly save lives, it will not comply with the current fire codes. Several law makers have already told me the State Fire Marshall can make an amendment to allow the use of this device. I need as much support as I can get to ask for this amendment. PLEASE help us protect our children, sign our petition and tell everyone you know to do the same. You can also learn more about the Classroom Defender system at http://www.ClassroomDefender.com

Updates

February 9, 2013

The feedback from local legislators has been enlightening as they grapple with the friction between historical fire codes and modern security needs. I am currently drafting a formal proposal for the State Fire Marshal to demonstrate how safety can be improved without compromising our emergency evacuation standards.

The momentum behind this request confirms that many people share the same concern for school safety. This growing consensus provides a strong foundation as we prepare to discuss potential fire code amendments with state officials.

Update the laws already!! We are tired of waiting for officials to do the right thing while our schools are sitting ducks.

My kids r in school all day and I worry constantly about this. We need to be able to lock them in if something happens. Common sense needs to win out.

This is a no brainer. Why is this even a question? Protect the students first.

Stupid fire codes that put kids at risk. The world has changed and the rules need to change with it.

Whatever keeps the bad guys out. My wife is a teacher and she feels way too exposed right now.

YES. Keep the doors locked. Nobody should be able to reach in and open a classroom door from the hallway.
