In the October 2016 Common Council Meeting, an alderman re-wrote Manitowoc’s Mission, Vision, and Values statement without consulting any other councilmen or holding any kind of public input session. This alderman has removed the words “arts, humanities, and cultural diversity” from our city’s mission statement, and has replaced it with a boilerplate mission that can apply to any city anywhere. Sign this petition to tell Council to revert back to the previous mission statement until a better one can be written that does not exclude our community’s values and things that make us unique.

Previous Mission:

“Through innovative and dynamic leadership, the City of Manitowoc will effectively manage public resources to enhance the quality of life for the benefit of the entire community by:

  • Embracing the arts, humanities, and cultural diversity,
  • Fostering opportunities for economic growth,
  • Protecting the safety and well-being of the community,
  • Serving the needs of the community with respect and dedication."

New Mission (as of Oct. 2016):

“The City of Manitowoc’s Mission is Provide and Improve Public Safety, Infrastructure, and Services across our Community to ensure it is a Great Place to Be.”

Updates

March 4, 2017

I spent the entire morning staring at the old mission statement and then the new one and honestly it feels like we are losing a piece of our soul to some generic corporate template that could be stuck on a wall in any random town. People have been messaging me with their own memories of why those specific words mattered to them and it is honestly so heartening to read because it reminds me that we are not just fighting over text on a page but the actual spirit of Manitowoc.

Creative, innovative thinking & problem-solving is necessary & vital to a thriving community - and is inspired/encouraged by the Arts!

As a former resident of Manitowoc, and who is now going to college, I believe that embracing the arts, humanities, and cultural diversity will make people like me want to live there. While I believe that improved public safety, infrastructure, and public services are important to our city's economy and well-being, omitting the statement about the arts, humanities, and cultural diversity shows that the city of Manitowoc does not care about these values. We need to embrace these values so we can improve ourselves as a city.

I can`t understand why anyone would think it appropriate or necessary to eliminate a phrase that indicates and promotes good solid, healthy, compassionate values when describing our community. I support retaining the words and that th emission statement remain as original

I can see the need for infrastructure improvement, but add it to the previous statement, don't eliminate the previous mission.

Does one person have the right to redefine what our community is and who we are? I think not.

It is not right that our city's mission, vision, and values can be written and determined by just one man on council without any prior public input forum. The value of a mission is huge. It is what should be driving our city. Every decision leadership makes should be in support of our mission. By replacing our once authentic and original mission statement with this boiler plate, poorly written bumper sticker is a huge mistake.
