I honestly did not think we would see this kind of energy when I first started this because it felt like shouting into the wind. Seeing people care this much about the Mendel makes my head spin in the best way possible and I keep coming back here just to read what everyone has to say.

I was looking at the old photos of the gallery again today and it just hurts to think about moving everything out of that space because it was built for the art and for us. I have been spending my nights trying to track down anyone at the city office who will actually pick up the phone to talk about the name change but so far it is just a lot of voicemails and awkward silence that honestly says more than any formal memo could.

My husband and I met at the Mendel on our first date. And yes, that's how the gallery is, has always been called in short : the Mendel. I would also be furious if I were the grand-daughter. A name change would be disrespectful. Money....changes our history.... Sask Place will forever be Sask Place, and do will the Centennial Auditorium. As a Saskatoonian, (not....politician) hear my voice: respect over money! Historical preservation as the top priority (and everything is in a name). It would absolutely be sad to see the name change.... I hope, the people making decisions....really reflect on their impact. The Mendel.... must keep it's identity! Good luck, and sending e-support :)

I am ashamed of the way our city has treated Fred Mendel's legacy to this city. Such a beautiful gallery we all have been proud of so many years to be taken away from future generations. All that money put into a new gallery when our roads are such a mess. Have you seen 2ND AVE.

My daughters, granddaughters and I visited the Mendel a few years ago. We bought some wonderful David Geary cards in the gallery shop. I happened upon this website because I took one of the cards illustrating Tommy Douglas to a meeting in Perth Ontario this evening sponsored by the NDP. Tom Mulcair saw the card and wondered where he could get a copy. I cannot imagine the wisdom of moving the Mendel Gallery to a new location, and removing the name Mendel.

I've been to Saskatoon twice and twice I've visited the Mendel Gallery. Such a beautiful space and collection! It should be preserved

Get a Grip Saskatoon, you grow by having more then one major gallery etc. Kudos if the name remains on a gallery somewhere in the City.

It's like the mayor thinks there's oil underneath the Mendel. That's the only reason I see for creating that vast waste of money downtown and moving the gallery. We don't need a 'world class' facility when we have something with heritage and meaning to Saskatoon and the people that live here.

This gallery, at its present location, was an important part of my life, as a Saskatoon resident, for my first 46 years. Now as a Nova Scotian resident I return annually with my family to again experience the way this gallery and conservatory fill my heart. I believe something valuable will be lost in its move.

Outside of the fact that I grew up in Saskatoon in the fifties and sixties and the gallery was a place that brought me into the world of art it would be in my mind a complete travesty to loose it and especially it's name. I suspect some developer wants to build a high rise there. It is iconic. Maybe instead tear down the Bes and build a several story pay parking lot...

I love the conservatory and the little zen park. It's a great place to go for a little piece of sanctuary. A pity to lose a lovely building on the river to some likely private company.

What a travesty. Fred Mendel put Saskatoon on the map with his donations of money and paintings. Why would the city want to spurn this legacy?
