We call on Wandsworth Borough Council to consult the local community fully before taking any action in relation to the trees in Chestnut Avenue on Tooting Common, providing the community with the expert advice about the state of the trees and the range of options to deal with any current issues (including replacing the trees all at once, one by one as required, "inter-planting" between the existing trees, and the options of the type of trees to replace the existing trees) in order to consider the views of local people before making a decision about the future of the avenue.
This petition was agreed at the Furzedown Community Network Committee on the 14th February, as a response to concerns raised by a number of local residents. The Furzedown Community Network (FCN), is made up of local people keen to promote a sense of community and help make Furzedown – an area between Streatham and Tooting in South West London – a good place to live, work and play

Seeing 250 names on this list feels incredible because these trees are an essential part of the park where my kids grew up. It proves just how many of us cherish this canopy as the heart of our neighborhood and want a real say in its future.

We need to be sure that every alternative to the loss of these trees has been thoroughly explored. If there are choices, we need to know what they are. Do not rush this - there are probably other ways forward that would be less damaging.
The Chestnut Avenue is a unique asset. If trees need to be replaced over time so be it - but to fell the avenue wholesale and to plant saplings in its place would be an act of vandalism which would ruin the common for decades.
Please do not cut any trees down without first informing local residents WHY. i have lived in Furzedown for 38 years and the trees are part of the good life of living in inner London.
Lack of consultation is sad; I know there are trees that have to go but not sure the argument to replace all of them so that it becomes a proper unified Avenue (same age/height/type) is right for Tooting
We live in Furzedown and have not been consulted about felling these beautiful trees on our common. There seems to be doubts about whether they are indeed all diseased. Don't act in haste to repent at leisure!
TREES ARE NATURES WAY, OF PROTECTING US.!. NURSERY TREES SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 3 FOOT OF MULCH BELOW, THE LOWEST ROOT, THEN BE WATERED BY A PIPE WHICH, SHOULD LEAD INTO THE MULCH, I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN THE COMPANIES ARE SUPPOSED TO MANTAIN THE TREES PLANTED IN THE BOROUGH. WX
These trees are part of Tootings heritage. They are also very important in helping to clean the very polluted air around the common. take out the dead ones and replant.

Horse chestnuts can live up to 350 years. Cutting them down now has no basis in biology. Further, they provide welfare benefits for everyone who walks the common, and would continue to do so for another 100 years at least.
