The school board confirmed a new policy requiring all student cell phones to remain stored away for the entire day. We are now moving into the implementation phase to monitor how these updated procedures are communicated to families.

Help us make McMurray Middle School a cell phone free place for our kids. Middle school years are tough. There are a lot of distractions, emotional growth, and self-acceptance that happens. Cell phones and social media apps make the rocky road much rockier. Did you know that 55% of middle schools allow cell phone access during the day? Did you know that 80% of parents surveyed by Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age, said they DID NOT want their child to have access to their phones during school hours? This petition will help convince the school administration to keep cell phones "Away for the Day" during school hours.

I agree with comments here. I believe that it would be a relief to students to remove the pressures that come from having the phone at school and also having to loan out their phones to friends who do not have them.
I'm very supportive of this. I know of professional offices where cell phones are not allowed inside, and people cope. Middle school children should be allowed the opportunity to be fully present with their teachers and peers.
As someone who has worked in technology and informal education for 37 years (running Paul Allen's computer museum etc.) I can tell you that the research fully supports limits on screen time. In fact, most Silicon Valley CEOs send their kids to screen free schools. Especially on Vashon, phones are not needed on school. Thank you.
This is sooo important. My daughter at age 11, 6th grade, had access to Instagram and snap chat through her friends phones at school at lunch and in some classes. The age restriction is 13+ for Instagram. All research recommends putting phones away during school.
Maybe there is need for an exception for medical apps if any students have a doctor’s note for such use. Otherwise this is a very sound idea and I support it without reservation.
I appreciate the different opinions and intensity of feeling that people are expressing, but believe that kids' access to cell phone distracts from learning in classroom and interferes with development of real time, face to face social skills and developing the ability to soothe themselves/cope away from home. If phones are prohibited, the school will need to increase ability to support communication between parents and kids in other ways and would likely need to budget extra staff time or recruit parent volunteers to accomplish this.
I will need my daughter to be able to access her phone as soon as class is dismissed for the day in case there is an after school plan change or confusion.

YES! 100%. Cell phones should be for before and after school only, not during school hours. France banned cell phones at school up to 9th grade in 2018. For good reason. It's harming our children's social and emotional development. We owe this to our children. Boundaries! Please sign.
