Students are limited on what they can access and view on their personal devices. While some students have the privilege of using cellular data, when every student is using it at once it becomes hard to use due to signal errors. Many students have extracurricular activities and jobs after school. With low signal, it can be hard to arrange pick up times, family emergencies, and early pick up, not to mention students needing support from home.

Students must attend school and stay in their designated study hall periods. They often find themselves without schoolwork and nothing else to do. Without the access of phones, we are forced to sit and wait the full duration of the 75 minute class period.

With the continuous growth of fear surrounding school shootings, students are anxious and have fear of being stuck in school while their one plea for help (their phone) is, “safe, but out of reach”. They fear they won't be able to send their final “I love you” or “goodbye mom” in the instance of a school shooting.

Like any restaurant, hotel, coffee shop, government building, library, public transportation and shopping mall, free WiFi is a basic necessity. Schools should follow this model as students are forced by the government to attend.

By signing the petition, you agree to the following terms

  • Phones will be put away in designated phone holders during academic and instructional classes.
  • Phones can be used by students during study halls, lunch periods, break, Flex Time and passing time between classes.
  • Teachers should not be penalized or threatened by the school for not enforcing the rules.
  • WiFi limitations will be abolished, allowing students to access social media and contacting home on personal devices.

Notes: The school has the ability to limit the website use and Downloadable apps on the students school issued Ipad. There is no need to limit the WiFi usage on personal devices.

The policy being enforced was written in 2010, let that sink in.

I’m a sophomore who has never used social media. My phone is a cheap six-year-old Android and I still find this policy frustrating. It sounds counterintuitive, but I (and many others I’ve talked to) now spend far more mental energy on our phones throughout the day than last year. When I have to constantly remember to grab my phone at the end of class—or determine where exactly I left it—I open up a new mental loop of worry that leaves me less able to concentrate and my focus more scattered. For as many students as this happens to, that’s a lot of academically focused time lost. Furthermore, when some people have cellular data and others don’t, this policy just opens up an inequality. Thank you, Sam, for starting this petition—the school is going to be so much better with this change. —A

I need to be able to contact my siblings and mom if there’s in emergency, I need to be able to know if I need to pick up my sisters in an emergency because my mom is single parenting, I need to stay in contact with my family. This new policy has made that very hard and is grating on all our mental health’s

They need to change this! I haven’t been able to listen to the music that helps me focus, despite having accessibility things that allow me to, plus having the phone away is more distracting than having it with you, because there are kids who would probably steal it here!

The entire thing is just following a nationwide trend. They’re taking it to the extreme by turning off the guest wifi during school hours, meaning that there will be no communication between ANYONE during school hours, except for the staff. They have a different wifi for people who work for the school, putting the adults over the students and making students feel overall dismissed and disregarded. This is outrageous to take our personal devices, emphasis on PERSONAL devices, during free time or even at the end of the day when we need to make plans. What happens when our students get anxious that they will get punished for even checking their phone for a text from their mother or a reminder for something important? Overall terrible call by the school and everyone is mad

I think when we are in class it's good to have the phones away, but study halls, lunch, and non class times is ridiculous. Yes, it's good to be away from social media at times, but they have taken it to a whole nother Level some parents cant just have their child call them at any time because of their work, and it's also inconvenient.

The cisco webex blocks are ridiculous. Theyve also blocked pinterest, which is often used as a tool in art classes, and i use personally for art references. People have heightened anxiety daily regarding their phones being confiscated in the halls, meaning theyd be unable to contact their family even outside of class. Furthermore, many peoples buses leave minutes after school is dismissed, leaving them little to no time to pick up their phones.

Wifi should be reinstated and phones allowed during study hall, flex, passing and lunch. I have no service and cannot even contact my parent to pick me up without the wifi.
