Petition to Calhoun County Board of Commissioners
We, the undersigned, call upon the Calhoun County, Michigan Board of Commissioners to immediately cancel the contract that allows the Calhoun County jail to be used by Homeland Security’s Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) because:
- ICE is guilty of human rights abuses and violations in rounding up thousands and thousands of peaceful undocumented workers.
- Most recently ICE has viciously separated infants and children from their parents, imprisoning both parents and children for many months. Parents have even been deported without their children.
- Conditions at the Calhoun County jail are not fit for human beings. It has been reported that up to 12 people are packed into tiny cells, food is horrible or even not given, and sanitation and health care conditions are inadequate.

Reaching this level of support is heavy because it reminds me of how many people see the injustice in our community. I am exhausted by the silence from the board but seeing your resolve keeps me moving forward.

This contract is unethical. Please end it. If you don’t, please expect massive difficulties in your re-election.
As a long-time Calhoun County resident, I do not want to benefit from the disgraceful actions of ICE. Please end this unsavory and unethical contract. We would benefit, far greater, by treating people as human beings instead of as animals.
As a resident of Calhoun County, I am horrified we are cooperating with this inhumane initiative. We are a country of immigrants...what we are doing with these people and families fleeing unsafe conditions in their home country is immoral. Please do the moral thing - cancel the contract with ICE.
So we've built a new police station. We've hired more deputies. Matt Saxton is pleased. We are not. End this contract now.
Calhoun County jail needs to end its contract with ICE. For the extra money you are supporting family separations.
I am deeply concerned that my tax dollars are being used to detain immigrants.

My county taxes are being used to treat innocent people inhumanely, so that the county jail can make money for "themselves."
This contract is unethical. Please end it. If you don’t, please expect massive difficulties in your re-election.
