We, the undersigned residents of Canada,
Draw the attention of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
to the following:
The federal Holidays Act states that if July 1 falls on a Sunday, the official statutory holiday shall be held on the Monday, July 2.
As a result, businesses must close on the Monday. As Sunday is now being included in many regular work weeks, this means employees must work on Sunday, July 1st, for regular pay.
THEREFORE, your petitioners request the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages to amend the Holidays Act concerning Canada Day to read:
July 1 is a legal holiday and shall be kept and observed as such throughout Canada under the name of "Canada Day".

Reaching this level of support honestly leaves me feeling exhausted but entirely validated. It is getting harder to ignore us and we are not stopping until the law actually reflects the day we celebrate.

I can't imagine the United States celebrating July 4 on July 5. Canada Day should be enjoyed by all is citizens.
Its ridiculous that we have to work on the actual day just because of some outdated rule. July 1 is Canada Day period.

Here's hoping a Liberal government will actually care about retail workers and anyone else affected by this archaic law
