PETITION TO THE Government of Canada
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada
Draw the attention of the Government of Canada
to the following:
THAT The federal Holidays Act states that if July 1 falls on a Sunday, the official statutory holiday shall be held on the Monday, July 2.
As a result, businesses must close on the Monday. As many provinces now have Sunday shopping, this means that their employees must work on Sunday, July 1st, for regular pay.
THEREFORE, your petitioners request the Government of Canada
To Amend the Holidays Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. H-5), concerning “Canada Day” (R.S., c. H-7, s. 2; 1980-81-82-83, c. 124, s.) 1 to read:
July 1 is a legal holiday and shall be kept and observed as such throughout Canada under the name of “Canada Day”.

The government might think they can hide behind archaic language in the Holidays Act, but this momentum proves we are done waiting for them to fix this mess. It is time for Parliament to stop forcing workers to lose out on holiday pay just because of how the calendar falls.

Actually, because of the wording of the Federal Holidays Act, in 2018 Canada Day will be on July 2nd. This is what we are trying to change.
As a person who works in retail I must say that it is complete CRAP that we are forced to work on July 1 if it falls on a Sunday. Canada day should be celebrated on the first no matter what day of the week it falls on.
Please leave history alone.

Canada must be kept an official statutory holiday on July 1st regardless of the day of the week so that all Canadians may partake in the celebrations held on this day!
