I am signing this petition to express my strong support for the expansion of the foreign language program for the Brookfield Public Schools into the 5th grade. The signing of this petition is to let the Brookfield Public School Board, the Superintendent, and the community know that there are many community members who value and support the opportunity for our children to learn a second language from the earliest level possible. 

Implementing the study of a foreign language at an earlier age is critical to preparing students to live and work in an increasingly global economy. With our rapidly shrinking world, our children will be immersed in a global society where knowledge of more than one language and culture will be vital.

Studies have shown that the human brain is more open to linguistic development during the years between birth and pre-adolescence. When children have an early start to a long sequence of language instruction, they can achieve fluency that has not been possible in the past due to the late start of most language programs. The Connecticut Committee for Economic Development has stated "…in order to confront the 21st century challenges to our economy and national security, our education system must be strengthened to enhance the foreign language skills and cultural awareness of our students.”
