Emory is a liberal arts school, yet it only offers a handful of the most crucial courses, the Visual Arts. Out of 7,803 students at Emory(2015-16), only about 15 students are able to enroll in one of the 8 total visual arts courses. Where is this variety in courses that Emory claims to offer? Where is this creativity that Emory claims to have in its mission statement? This is a petition that attempts to make a change and bring more art courses to the Emory curriculum. ive been talking to a couple of people in the department lately and getting a sense of why things are so limited right now. its frustrating to hear the same excuses about budget and space when so many of us are clearly asking for more. dont stop talking about this because they need to know we arent going to just disappear.

the support behind this has been unreal and it proves how many of us feel the same way about our curriculum. its honestly wild to see this gain so much steam. im looking into next steps to get this in front of the people in charge.

Especially with all of the stressful high level academics here, students should get the opportunity to take a class that is relaxing and helps them express themselves.
I agree. Why are there more art history courses than art courses? It's cool to study an artist, but isn't it cooler to be one?
bring back the art dept for real. we need more than just pre-med stuff here
finally someone said it. i came here for a liberal arts degree but i cant even take a basic drawing class because its always full
its so frustrating trying to get into these classes. how are we supposed to be a top tier school with zero studio space?

The depletion of the Visual Arts at Emory has been the saddest part of my time at the University. As a Visual Artist outside of the major, I have nearly zero access to the building, classes, etc. Through its actions, Emory has shown us where its priorities are-- but they should adjust their PR/Reputation to fit accordingly. We are not a strong liberal arts school-- we are a strong pre-professional school. Bring back the visual arts and we can turn that around. The only people ignorant to these shifts are the administration; Students on the ground feel the effects of these changes everyday and these changes inform how the student body feels towards Emory and its 'commitments'. Our school is turning into a homogeneous, pre-professional funnel-- and that is heartbreaking.
