The Durham University Art Society is looking for a university owned art studio which can be dedicated to visual arts activities. As there is no permanent studio space in Durham, many students artists are struggling to find a place where they can work on art projects.

With a dedicated art studio space, the Art Society will be able to hold regular life drawing and arts & crafts activity with more freedom without worrying about getting the room messy. Also, it will enable student artists to work on longer art projects, including large canvas paintings, oil paintings, sculptures and more. If an art studio is present, the Art Society can also potentially provide art supplies such as easels, canvases, oil paints etc. for members to use.

Student groups and societies other than Art Society will also benefit from a university owned art studio. Any student groups needing a large space to work on artwork or hold workshops should be able to use the studio. Some examples can be making theatre props and set designs or holding art workshops for children, but the potential is limitless.

If you are a student artist looking for a place to work on your art project, a student group or society who will be interested in utilising the studio for your group’s need, or anyone who is supportive of a more creative art scene in Durham University, please sign the petition to support the founding of a university owned art studio!

Every sign helps!

I am gathering testimonials from student groups who lack space for set design and workshops to present to the university administration. Email your representative on the student union board today to demand they prioritize dedicated studio access. Keep talking about this in group chats and post the link to your social media stories to pressure the decision makers.

We hit a real turning point today and it is clear the administration cannot ignore our need for a dedicated studio space any longer. Post the link on your Facebook pages and email your department reps to demand they prioritize this issue now.

Although I'm studying for a degree in Archaeology I did art at A-level, and I definitely found it benefited my overall academic experience as sometimes it provided relief from stressful deadlines and studying. I would therefore love to see some more access to creative spaces in Durham, particularly as there is other great support for the arts in areas such as music and Drama.

In a university lacking an art department, yet bursting with artistic talent, it is a great shame that there isn't some studio space to help out. The university has spent millions of pounds on acquiring art (and most of it locked away in areas that students aren't normally allowed to go to)- might be nice to spend a little of that money on some actual art-inclined students.

Durham is severely lacking in this department and this could help with the dipping mental health of your students. What is more important at the end of the day?

This is a great idea for the students to be able to set down some roots in one area without having to waste time packing up only to have to set up again for the next session

It would be incredibly useful to have a studio/art room as a central location for colleges, other societies, outreach and community engagement activities, and individual students to use for artistic projects in the Durham campus.

I would love to have a space where I can work outside of the small space of my room and keep art materials, as well as get to meet other artists in the area.
