- We are starting this petition in hopes of bringing back girls soccer to the middle school.
It has come to my attention that although SMS has a coed soccer team, we only have about four girls on the team that unfortunately sit out during most games.
By taking away soccer you are now losing a whole soccer team of girls in one year. Some of these girls will do other sports, but a lot of them will stop playing in general due to their love of soccer.
Youth sports are so important not only by staying healthy and active in a world full of electronics but also by staying connected with one another.
I ask you sign this petition to help bring back girls soccer to the middle school.

I am honestly overwhelmed by the response to this goal. It was never my intention to lead something so big and I am just so grateful that you all care as much as I do about these girls getting on the field.

I called the administration at Schaghticoke. There has not been girls interscholastic soccer in recent memory. There IS girls intramural soccer at Schaghticoke. That FACT that there is no girls interscholastic soccer has NOTHING to do with the school budget. The major reason for coed school sports is not enough student interest. They did say that they were going to investigate expanding the program.
Unless this was replaced with a new sport for girls to play, I don't see how this isn't a Title IX violation, as the girls seem to be denied the opportunity for equal benefits that come with playing on a team. Being on the team is not equal to playing for it.
I’ve served on school boards facing the need to cut sports to save the budget. But I’ve also fought that girls sports in particular need to be kept. It’s not a Title IX thing. It’s an education system honoring gender equity and showing girls they have equal value. Get creative and find a wya to keep this program going.
Katie was devastated when they took it away just as her class of 11 soccer players were entering SMS! It has hurt the town and the high school team.
Strong high school programs begin at the younger ages. The love of a sport also needs to be nurtured at the younger ages.
This town wants to cut everything that our kids have just to save a buck or buy anew pothole filling machine. It shouldn’t be at our kids’ expense!
Thank you for taking up this important issue. We want our sports programs at the HS to be growing, then we must encourage participation at the middle school as well.

As a former resident and physical education teacher I gladly sign this petition! The “wash-out” rate for middle school girls is the highest. Girls need to have athletic opportunities at that age, in order to continue to be healthy and confident in their abilities. Placing girls on coed teams where they have to compete against boys and have little opportunity to participate is NOT acceptable.
