Volusia County Guardian uniforms were initially designed to be tactical for us to blend in and be able to conceal ourselves. The bright yellow shirts make us an easily visible target. Law enforcement officers in our county wear tactical, subdued colors. Why should a school guardian be in a bright color? If the guardian goes down first, we are unable to keep the school safe. We would like for the district to allow us to wear the black & gray uniforms for our own personal safety.
I can deal with the names I’m called on a daily basis such as bumble bee, etc.. it is not tactically safe it presents us as a large target and the badge gives the public a perception we are police officers, which we are not.
