Final supporters
Remember how many books you read in elementary school? A ton, right? And why was that? Two words: Book It.
BOOK IT! was created in 1985 and currently reaches over 14 million students in 38,000 elementary schools annually.BOOK IT! motivates children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza... but only if you are a K-6th grader. Why stop there? Here is a current look at literacy in America:
-According to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, 32 million adults in the U.S. can't read.That's 14 percent of the population.
-21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read.
-According to the Department of Justice, "The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure." The stats back up this claim: 85 percent of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, and over 70 percent of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth grade level.
My proposal to Pizza Hut is to open wide the gates and extend BOOK
IT! participation to all ages. Bar none. They might not eliminate
illiteracy, but they could take a huge bite out of it.It's time
for a more literate America! WE WANT BOOK IT! FOR ALL!

I really started this just hoping a few people might remember the joy of those pizza coupons. Seeing so many of you connect with this mission has been completely overwhelming and I am just doing my best to keep up with all your incredible stories.

Ages 4 and up through at least junior high would be awesome!! My preschooler can read and feels left out. We homeschool, so I cannot tell him it is because of the school program.
I absolutely agree that the Book It Program should be open to all children. Honestly, it's almost harder to get teenagers to sit down and read a book, especially in this age of technology where all information is expected to be quick and to the point. Many teenagers need additional motivation and a quick bite to eat sometimes does the trick
I do think this is a great idea considering I homeschool 3 and 2 out of them can do the book it so the other thinks yall are unfair. However mom makes him his own book it but would be great for yall to do it. No reason for the older ones not to be rewarded for reading.
My 15 year old daughter is mentally disabled, with a reading level of a 3rd grader and the mentality and emotions of a young elementary student. She would love to be able to participate in Book it again, like she did in elementary school!
Make it available through high school. I am shocked and sad to speak to high schoolers who only read required books. This program may offer the incentive the older students need to read for pleasure. Consider it.
I have a 3 yr old and he loves books .but still is learning to read I wish this program was something he could be apart of .

I have a 12 year old son with Autism who would not only love this program, but it would give him more incentive to read. I also have a 15 and 17 year old high school students who also need lots of incentive to read. I think opening the book it program to children of all ages would be a Wonderfully AWESOME idea!
