Stop Wasting Money. Stop Wasting Books. Let's Modernize Our Schools in Jamaica.

Every year, hundreds of parents face the same struggle: finding thousands of dollars to purchase school textbooks and workbooks for their children.

Many of these books are only partially used during the school year. Because students are required to write directly in them, they cannot be passed on to younger siblings, sold second-hand, or donated to another family.

This system creates unnecessary financial pressure on parents while producing enormous amounts of waste every single year.

We believe there is a better way.

We are asking the Ministry of Education and school administrators to consider modern, cost-effective alternatives such as:

Option 1: Digital Workbooks

Allow schools or parents to purchase licensed PDF versions of workbooks. Teachers can assign only the pages needed, and families can print those pages at home or through the school. This reduces costs, minimizes waste, and ensures students still complete written work.

Option 2: Reusable Textbooks

Where possible, replace write-in workbooks with reusable textbooks and separate exercise books. Students would complete their work in notebooks, allowing textbooks to be reused for several years, just as many high schools already do.

Option 3: School Book Exchange Program

Introduce organized textbook exchange or buy-back programs so families can sell or donate books that are still in good condition, making education more affordable for everyone.

Why This Matters

  • Reduce the financial burden on families.
  • Minimize unnecessary paper waste and support environmental sustainability.
  • Save parents valuable time searching for expensive books each year.
  • Encourage responsible use and reuse of educational resources.
  • Make quality education more accessible to every child.

Education should not become more expensive simply because books are designed to be disposable.

Many countries and schools around the world have successfully implemented reusable textbooks, digital learning materials, and book exchange programs. There is no reason we cannot explore similar solutions that meet the needs of our students while easing the burden on parents.

We respectfully call on the Ministry of Education, school boards, publishers, and school administrators to review the current textbook system and work together to implement a more affordable, sustainable, and practical approach.

By signing this petition, you are supporting smarter solutions that benefit students, parents, schools, and our environment.

Together, we can create a school system that works better for everyone.

This new practice of making everything a workbook, so books can't be passed down within families, needs to stop. Why should I have to buy the exact same books multiple times just because I have more than one child? It feels like it's all about putting more money in the publishers' pockets.

Joining the call for modern, effective, affordable & accessible educational tools and supplies for a significant majority of Jamaican families. Many youths are being left behind, widening economic gaps.

Why can't school books, uniforms, and supplies be included in school fees (fees which are already expensive enough on their own)

I hate to see the unnecessary burden placed on parents. It's rough or v there and cost of living, education gets worse every year.
