The town of Moncks Corner is trying to rezone 16.8 acres of land from General Commercial to Multi-Family Residential, off of Merrimack Boulevard and Highway 52. This will make it possible for the town to build a maximum of 125 two-story townhome units. The town's Community Development Director, Doug Polen says this area would make a great location for townhomes, seeing that it is near a considerable amount of already existing multi-family housing units. This will result in even more of a traffic issue that has already been increased due to the closing of the side road beside the old Food Lion. The statement made about the area mostly being multi-family homes is also incorrect. There are over 100 single-family homes around this area including, Merrimack Boulevard, Johnny Reb Drive, Monitor Circle, Lael Court, Lacey Court, Gulledge Street, and off of White Street. Many residents of this area are already frustrated with the lack of highway maintenance, storm water runoff issues, and the lack of sidewalks and street lights. Please consider signing this petition to help Moncks Corner maintain its small town feel and keep these long time residents living in a safe and quite environment. Currently 12 acres in question act as a sound barrier from the Highway 52 overpass and the railroad track, that are also in this location.
