The state has officially agreed to move forward with the grade separated interchange. I am honestly stunned by this outcome and know it only happened because you refused to accept a bad plan. Please keep an eye on the construction phase to ensure the project stays on track.

According to the VTrans Multimodal Needs Assessment, the intersection of North Main Street and the U.S. 460 Bypass in the Town of Blacksburg has a high rate of severe accidents. In the Salem District, it ranks No. 8 by total crashes and No. 9 by the number of fatalities and injuries. In response to the Town and other parties, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) came up with a plan (the R-cut plan) to eliminate potential dangerous moves at the intersection. Many residents saw that as an inadequate approach only to shift problems elsewhere and introduce new complications. VDOT submitted the R-cut plan to the Town for it's approval. On Sept. 22, 2015 the Blacksburg Town Council hastily voted in a split decision to request VDOT to consider the R-cut plan.

Residents united to oppose the Town's decision. In a bold and courageous move, the Town decided to withdraw support for the R-cut plan and submit a new application to the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) for a grade separated interchange, something that the Town had advocated in the past with no success. In mid December, 2016, the Town received a letter from VDOT indicating that the agency has kept the R-cut plan on its Six-Year Improvement Program. This unexpected and unusual announcement can only complicate the process and gravely jeopardize the real solution, building a grade separated interchange.

At this point, citizens' involvement is pivotal to support our Town's latest decision and to request VDOT to withdraw the flawed R-cut plan. Concurrently, we encourage CTB to fund construction of a grade separated interchange at the North Main Street and the U.S. 460 Bypass intersection. Finally, while awaiting a permanent solution, we ask the Town of Blacksburg and VDOT to take all necessary measures to reduce the number of accidents at that intersection.

Sign now to eliminate accidents and loss of precious lives at the North Main Street and the U.S. 460 Bypass Intersection.

This effort is dedicated to the memory of those who have lost their lives at this intersection and to the support of their families and friends.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you have stepped up to support this safer path for our intersection. This momentum belongs entirely to the residents who refused to accept a quick fix when we deserve a real solution.

The choice of u-turns as an option is not realistic. The u-turn at Fortress is a completely choice, considering the trucks coming down a 1 mile steep hill in the opposite direction. Inclement weather will make this an even bigger safety risk.

I worry especially about teen drivers at this dangerous intersection who are unexperienced at judging distances and speeds - I have one driving and one about to drive....thank you for allowing input! :)

My 15 year old son was in an accident there and is lucky to be alive. This needs to be fixed the right way. Your solution would not eliminate the scenario that caused his accident and many others.

The cross depicted in the right hand side of this screen, is in memory of a person who lost their life in this intersection. Not far from there, there are flowers hung, for another life lost. This is an extremely dangerous area, it needs to change, no more lives need to be lost here.

Rcut solution will make other entrances up the road onto 460 more dangerous as drivers will make u turns at Coal Bank exit or up the 460 corridor where it is impossible to see oncoming cars. You will only move the accidents up 460.

The R-cut plan is not a solution. It is a bandaid that will simply waste tax dollars without solving the fundamental problem. If VDOT opposes a grade separated interchange then they need to suggest an alternative solution that is as good or better. I suspect VDOT is playing politics here.

I'm at that intersection 4-5 days/week. It's a mess but the R-CUT is worse. Don't waste $$$ on R-CUT. Install grade-separated intersection, please.

I have personally seen the injuries and deaths along with many wrecks at This location. Please don't put a bandaid on this location.
