Birkbeck is revoking 24 room access to students from Monday 14th July. This decision affects ALL students who use ANY departmental and general rooms that currently have 24 hour access, for the rest of everyone's time at Birkbeck.

This means any students who use the PCs or prefer to study on campus will be asked to leave every evening when they close up the rest of the building, affecting group & final year projects as well as revision & essays for all.

What students are asking Birkbeck to recognise is how vital having unrestricted access to its facilities is to many students & the quality of our work.

The fact that studying at Birkbeck is designed for evenings, and individuals that have other projects in their personal and professional lives, should be explanation enough for why having time restrictions on when we can work is unacceptable.

Furthermore, students without their own PC access - who applied to Birkbeck with the assurance that they would have 24 hour access to IT facilities - are being stripped of their ability to carry out necessary research, revision and writing at the same pace as their peers.

There is also evidence to support that having a University-based space to study is essential for many students, as is the social nature of studying and learning with fellow students without the necessity of the total silence required in the library.

Having 24 hour access to areas & facilities on campus is what many students want, as well as what they need.

You are invited to sign this petition to show Birkbeck that students can't accept these vital resources being taken from us. Please also use the comments section to add examples of your use of the 24 hour rooms and ask Birkbeck to revise its decision.
