A Poverty Reduction Strategy for Nova Scotia
High rates of poverty impact every age group and family type in Nova Scotia. People who live in poverty lack the basic income for a minimum standard of wellbeing. In Nova Scotia over 131,000 people lived in poverty in 2004. Political attention to this issue has been sporadic and unfocused. We, the undersigned of this petition, urge the following party leaders: Hon. Rodney MacDonald, Premier of Nova Scotia (PC) , Darrell Dexter, Leader of the Opposition (NDP), and Michel P. Samson, Interim Leader (LIB) to work collaboratively regarding Bill No. 74, An Act to Establish a Committee to Develop a Poverty Reduction Strategy in Nova Scotia introduced as a Private Members Bill by Stephen McNeil, MLA for Annapolis, on November 2, 2006. We are petitioning you as political party caucus leaders within the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly to review and improve the status of Bill 74 so that it may be provided with the opportunity for quick passage into legislation. We are petitioning you to make the alleviation of poverty in Nova Scotia a priority.
