We, the undersigned, call upon the City of Norwood to rename the Norwood Memorial Airport to the “Joseph W. Benkert Memorial Airport”.

Joe Benkert had a long history in general aviation. He was a pilot with over 19,000 hours of military, airline and corporate flight experience. He was also a well respected, national aviation authority and a true aviation teacher. He authored the college level text book 'Introduction to Aviation Science', and authored countless other aviation articles in national and local publications. For many years he owned Aviation Career Institutes where he taught and trained professional pilots and air traffic control specialists. No words can fully describe Joe’s contribution to general aviation and the Norwood Airport. Joe Benkert also contributed to the local economy by operating for many years “The Pilot Shop" - the largest retail pilot shop in the U.S. known world-wide by aviation enthusiasts and pilots alike.

No words can fully describe Joe’s contribution to general aviation. His life long legacy and contribution to the Norwood Airport is undisputed.

Knew Joe for years and he was a class act. A true gentleman and a hell of a pilot. Rename it already.

Makes sense to me. He put Norwood on the map for pilots everywhere.

Joe was a legend around the hangar. Norwood wont be the same without his name on the terminal. Lets get this done.

He taught me everything I know about flying. Such a huge loss for the av community. This is the least we can do to honor him.

Long overdue. He did so much for aviation in this city and his textbooks changed the game for so many young pilots. Do it.
