Ban Easter Monday Whipping and Water-pouring of women in the European Union. Save millions of women from this inappropriate tradition.
The petitioner requests that the EU reviews and bans the “tradition” of the Easter Monday Whipping and Water-pouring of women.
The tradition entails:
- Groups of male pass by the houses of women and "playfully" catch a female.
- They drench her with buckets of ice-cold water and whip her with willow branches. Women are held by men so that they cannot escape the "playful" drenching and the whipping.
- Once released, men are to be rewarded for their “services”. A female is to obediently thank her guests, offer them refreshments and even money.
- Female is expected to tie a ribbon on the willow whips with which they have been lashed. Men compete to collect as many ribbons as possible. (each ribbon represents one female)
This tradition can be severely detrimental to both female physical and mental well-being immediately and into the future and might project women as obedient subordinates.

The increase in support has provided the necessary leverage to request a formal hearing with the European Parliament Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. My team is currently drafting a policy briefing that outlines the legal arguments for classifying these practices as violations of physical integrity.

Disgusting and unacceptable, men participating in this should be legally prosecuted.
I never heard of this. I hope my children will never hear of this except in history books. Tradition must change or disappear when they do not respect human beings.
The only problem with your argument is that it is based on (ill-informed) belief that this tradition is as you said "socially disturbing", and that it is violent towards women. Which I don't blame you for given all the media madness that always shows the man-woman relationship as a persecutor-victim one. You seem to be a victim of that lie. If you have ever experienced this tradition or at least talked to different Slavic women and men, you would not have said that. The quick google search will tell you that the purpose of the Oblievačka is to make a girl healthy, pretty and fertile (scientific nonsense obviously). Nothing more! Now if you are a violent person you will do it with buckets of ice cold water even if the girl is clearly suffering. If you are a normal man you will do it with couple drops of lukewarm water or just with a perfume. Many girls require (!!) that you do it with a big bucket of water and are disappointed if you don't or even if you don't visit them! Myself with my brothers would have a small (500ml) bottle which I transformed into a water-gun and lasted me for the whole day (3-5) visits of my cousins, aunts and friends. Your final remark comparing this tradition to believing in "flat earth" is ridiculous. You would have to ban all the religions just because they have no scientific sense. That is the whole point of a tradition, it doesn't have any logic or or scientific sense! It is a way of remembering where we come from, remembering our past and to socialize with our family and neighbors today. The fact that it can turn violent is not a fault of the tradition, but of the violent person! You choose what you do with a knife - you can hurt somebody, or you can cook a delicious meal for somebody you love. That is the WHY you talked about. And that's why we don't ban knives in Slovakia, we "ban" the assassins and that's why we will not ban this tradition either.
You have never heard about this, yet you are quick to have an opinion about it based on one primitive article. Why don't you do some research about this centuries-long tradition and speak to both women and men who lived it and actually KNOW something about it. You then might be very surprised to hear their responses.
Yes, we need more restrictions, bans and fines. No touching, hugging nor shaking hands. Everybody locked up in their apartments glued to their HD flat screen! Viva la revolucion!!!!
Tessa, what the article (intentionally) fails to mention is that on the following day it is the women who do the same to men. I guess that you will classify that as a women empowerment, rather than a violence towards the men. Am I right?
Well, well, well. What do we have here? Westerners who have long lost their traditions trying to force the other cultures to get rid of theirs! Dear British and Americans, I know it must be hard to live in your sterile world, where the only real tradition is shopping, consuming and watching TV, but don't project your frustrations onto us. Don't import your sick neomarxist ideologies to our countries! Just look at your crime, rape and general violence statistics. Clean up your own mess and leave the others alone. No one asked for your ill-informed opinions.

Prepacte Lucia ale zda sa mi, ze "premietate" vasu vlastnu subjektivnu skusenost na cele narody, kde tato tradicia uz storocia funguje. Ako ste napisala "can be severely detrimental to both female physical and mental well-being immediately and into the future and might project women as obedient subordinates." Bolo vam fyzicky ublizene? Mate psychicke nasledky z olievacky? Ak ano, preco si myslite ze to tak bolo aj v ostatnych milionov pripadov na celom svete?
