We the residents of Madison NJ are petitioning the Mayor and Council to ban the planting of running bamboo an invasive species. It's rapid and often uncontrolled growth has become problematic in several neighborhoods across the borough. Bamboo, which technically is a giant grass, is one of the world’s most invasive plants. Once established, it is literally next to impossible to control. The sprouts that shoot up from the ground each spring can grow 12 inches a day! We ask the Mayor and Council to protect our rights as property owners.
Yellow groove bamboo is like cancer to land. Being invaded
by yellow groove bamboo is the worst continual nuisance I can imagine anyone
inflicting on his neighbor as yellow groove destroys land and everything in its
path. Yellow groove bamboo robs you of your quality of life and free use of
your property.

I have been spending my mornings documenting the new stalks creeping into my garden again and it is clear that this problem is only getting harder to manage. Neighbors have been reaching out to share their own photos of the destruction on their property and those images prove exactly why the council needs to act now.

Seeing this kind of momentum confirms that I am not alone in this fight to save our yards. This growth gives me real hope that we can stop this invasive plant from ruining another property.

We should all be concerned about the terrible negative environmental impacts of this invasive species on our local ecosystem. I was walking around Giralda Farms last week -- bamboo has sprung up on the Giralda Farms side of Treadwell. Give it a few years, and it will crowd out the native oaks that grow on that property. One of our neighbors has bamboo on his property, and its spread has plagued him ever since he bought his home. Bamboo is unstoppable. Our native trees cannot compete, and our NJ landscape and wildlife - nesting birds, deer, squirrels, foxes -- will pay the price.
I'm a Madison homeowner at 13 Woodcliff Drive. 15 Woodcliff Drive recently sold to a developer. 15 Woodcliff has a sprawling bamboo problem that has invaded and partially destroyed parts of our backyard.

Please note not all bamboo is invasive and "cancer" like. I live in Madison and do NOT have bamboo. I feel people should be allowed to enjoy their personal property AND be respectful of their neighbors. Please look beyond your own current neighbor dispute and respect ALL landowners in Madison. If your neighbor is infringing on your property rights, drive down to 50 Kings Road and file a citizen's complaint. We have a court system, so please use it and DO NOT push for ordinances that punish responsible neighbors. Bamboo can and should be planted by professionals. When properly planted using barrier systems and clumping bamboo, the planter can prevent the dreaded running rhizomes. Again, if you have a problem with your neighbor and neighborly conversations don't help, seek court assistance, but DO NOT impose your personal dispute on an entire community. Also, I object to your opening of "We the residents of Madison." Please speak on your own behalf.
Not all species of bamboo are invasive. So not all Bamboo should be banned. Furthermore this is not a town issue if your neighbor is disrespecting your property take them to court. I went to one of these town meetings and I was appalled when one speaker said that bamboo is not native to this country and should be banned. I am not native to this country and neither are cherry blossoms, that terrified me to say the least. Not all bamboo is invasive and not all bamboo spreads or hangs over when it hits 20 feet or more. In other words if one neighbor is playing his music to loud we should not ban all radios. Please respect other peoples Constitutional rights. I do not grow any bamboo, but someone that uses non-invasive bamboo to block out street noise should not pay the price because someone elses neighbor has no respect for their property, show respect for other peoples rights or you are stooping to the same level as your neighbor that is invading your property with bamboo.
Unless we are trying to attract pandas, there us no reason to permit this invasive species into the Borough. Grow roses instead.
This is certainly a legitimate issue. I was not aware of all of the problems that bamboo can cause.

The bamboo at the property to my rear requires a significant effort to keep ahead of but I really cannot contain it. I also must consider the substantial investment in landscaping that is threatened.
