The undersigned call upon all delegates of the Queensland ALP State Conference to oppose changes to party rules which abolish local electoral councils and expand member registration beyond local geographical branches.

We believe that these rule changes:

  • have been developed without broad consultation with branch members
  • are poorly drafted and will disempower hard working local branch members
  • will undermine the democratic principles that our party has been working hard towards
  • will centralise control of local campaigns in the hands of a few
  • will segment our membership and work against the strength that is found in diverse, local, geographical branches

We affirm that:

  • Our party is strongest when it is united
  • Our branches should be places of inclusion and diversity where we learn from each other and campaign together to make our communities better
  • Local branch members should have a direct role in decision making about local campaigns

THE MOMENTUM BEHIND THIS MOVEMENT IS ABSOLUTELY ELECTRIC!! IT IS CLEAR THAT OUR MEMBERSHIP WILL NOT STAND BY WHILE OUR LOCAL STRENGTH IS STRIPPED AWAY!!

I HAVE BEEN TALKING TO SO MANY MEMBERS WHO ARE ABSOLUTELY LIVID ABOUT THESE PROPOSED RULE CHANGES!! THE LEVEL OF PASSION FOR KEEPING OUR BRANCHES LOCAL AND POWERFUL IS UNSTOPPABLE RIGHT NOW!! WE ARE KEEPING THE PRESSURE ON TO ENSURE OUR VOICES REMAIN INTEGRAL TO EVERY CAMPAIGN DECISION!!

The Branches do the bulk of the work come election time FECs SECs and MECs are the life blood that feeds necessary information to the heart of the organization. Local knowledge of local issues are the only way we can stay ahead of the LNP. Local faces local contacts is our strength. Don’t allow changes that will weaken our party.

Grass roots is the lifeblood of our democratic party and to be protected if the ALP is to remain a democratic institution, not devolving all power to a central executive as was case in Qld under the Old Guard days

Would resign from Party and withdraw from all volunteer work on pre poll and election days.Let the new committee members arrange and run the elections without Branch members help in the future.

Branches must be central to the party and their role should not be diminished. Amalgamation of poorly functioning branches is an option. There should be widespread consultation re the roles of MEC's, SEC's and FEC's. We have not seen any of the branch review data to make judgments re restructuring. This is remiss of part organization.

I am not supportive of changes that diminish branch influence and participation. It will further erode members rights and concentrate control in the hands of a few which is already a major issue for our party. It will also increase the level of branch stacking that already occurs and even more deals being done by a few.

As a delegate for Wright I will be voting NO to these rule changes. I represent an electorate of 7500 sq klm of diverse, vibrate and hard working branch members who fought off 34% ON polling to win the State seat of Logan & took those lessons to Longman. #ourbranchesmatter

As A 40+ year member of the Vic Branch I have seen first hand why local branches based on federal electorates are crucial to the integrity of the party

Local Branches are the lifeblood of the ALP. Member-led FECs, SECs, MECs keep the grassroots links to the candidates and elected MPs active.
