The undersigned call upon all delegates of the Queensland ALP State Conference to oppose changes to party rules which abolish local electoral councils and expand member registration beyond local geographical branches.
We believe that these rule changes:
- have been developed without broad consultation with branch members
- are poorly drafted and will disempower hard working local branch members
- will undermine the democratic principles that our party has been working hard towards
- will centralise control of local campaigns in the hands of a few
- will segment our membership and work against the strength that is found in diverse, local, geographical branches
We affirm that:
- Our party is strongest when it is united
- Our branches should be places of inclusion and diversity where we learn from each other and campaign together to make our communities better
- Local branch members should have a direct role in decision making about local campaigns
