Dear Waverly City Council,
We, the residents of Ashton St, Queens Park, the undersigned, write you seeking action to remove the circumstances that allows dangerous traffic in our street. In particular, Monday to Friday, from about 07:20 to 08:30; and then again, to a lesser extent, in the afternoon between 15:00 - 17:00, with cars sometimes travelling as fast as 70 km/h.
The majority of this traffic seeks to bypass a car queue at the corner of Birrell St and York Rd, or to “save time” on about 100 meters of road. It has been pointed out that a fair amount of this belongs to the neighboring school drop-offs, and people heading to work
Clearly the current traffic conditions we have in Ashton St, the chicane located in the centre of the street, are not a significant deterrent to speeding.
These circumstances are extremely dangerous to children and residents alike.
We sincerely urge the Waverly Council to take action to limit the capacity of drivers to drive dangerously in Ashton St. We implore you to act before someone is seriously injured.
Below we set out two options to address the dangerous traffic in Ashton St, Queens Park:
Option 1 – Change Traffic Regulations
Change traffic regulations to affect positive outcome. Either limit left hand turns from Birrell St between 07:00-09:00 Monday to Friday; and/or apply a Speed Limit of 40 km/h 07:00-09:00 and 15:00-17:00 Monday to Friday.
Option 2 – Permanently Change Traffic Conditions
Change physical traffic conditions of the street. Alter Ashton St to become a no-through road at the point of Ashton and York Rd.
Please help us to make Ashton St a safer place.

I have been in contact with municipal representatives to discuss the specific dangers posed by current traffic flow patterns on Ashton St. While progress remains incremental, your continued participation provides the necessary evidence to sustain these discussions.

The momentum behind this initiative continues to grow as more residents recognize the urgency of addressing traffic safety on Ashton Street. This collective action is a testament to the community desire for a secure environment for our children and neighbors. I am grateful for the sustained commitment to this cause.

It’s only a matter of time until a child in our street is run over. The morning school drop off is a rat run of parents driving through at high speed. It’s a disgrace and the drivers have zero respect. The traffic slowing mechanisms really do little to impact it. We have raised this many times over the years with zero action. Please do something. Fully support this proposal as we have two young children and worry about unsafe driving on our street. Preference for creating a cul de sac, because the high speed "short cut" drivers aren't limited to a certain time of day so we need a permanent solution.
I do not think it necessary to close the road, but enforcement of the current speed limit and/or reduction to 40kms/hour would reduce the risk of injury set out in this petition.
I have been a resident in this street for almost 15 years and the traffic situation has become exponentially worse. Despite the speed hump at the top of the street, cars turn the corner at great speed and then gather speed down the hill. Even at the top end of the street near my house (no. 6), I have experienced several near misses as people use this street as a shortcut and speed down it to try and save time. This street has many children and the risk to them is considerable and concerning. I would not allow my children to cross this street even at age 10 by themselves due to the traffic volume and speeding issues. I urge council to take action as a matter of urgency to rectify what is an increasingly dangerous situation.
We are residents of Ashton St. We support only the change to a 40km zone and potentially an additional chicane in the middle of the street. We do not support the no turn between certain hours or the closure of the street. We feel this will place pressure on the rest of the residents/streets in the area and the dilution of the traffic is for the betterment of the area as a whole.
I’m a resident in 31 Ashton Street, Queens Park. The traffic is unbearable on our street.

I reside at 16 Ashton Street- I would add an additional indicator as to the speed at which vehicles travel in this residential street is the amount of rubber and ongoing damage to the chicane in the street.
