Ashton St - Changing Dangerous Traffic Conditions

I do not think it necessary to close the road, but enforcement of the current speed limit and/or reduction to 40kms/hour would reduce the risk of injury set out in this petition.

I have been a resident in this street for almost 15 years and the traffic situation has become exponentially worse. Despite the speed hump at the top of the street, cars turn the corner at great speed and then gather speed down the hill. Even at the top end of the street near my house (no. 6), I have experienced several near misses as people use this street as a shortcut and speed down it to try and save time. This street has many children and the risk to them is considerable and concerning. I would not allow my children to cross this street even at age 10 by themselves due to the traffic volume and speeding issues. I urge council to take action as a matter of urgency to rectify what is an increasingly dangerous situation.

We are residents of Ashton St. We support only the change to a 40km zone and potentially an additional chicane in the middle of the street. We do not support the no turn between certain hours or the closure of the street. We feel this will place pressure on the rest of the residents/streets in the area and the dilution of the traffic is for the betterment of the area as a whole.

I reside at 16 Ashton Street- I would add an additional indicator as to the speed at which vehicles travel in this residential street is the amount of rubber and ongoing damage to the chicane in the street.

It’s only a matter of time until a child in our street is run over. The morning school drop off is a rat run of parents driving through at high speed. It’s a disgrace and the drivers have zero respect. The traffic slowing mechanisms really do little to impact it. We have raised this many times over the years with zero action. Please do something. We support a safer street for all residents. We continue to oppose the reckless and dangerous school traffic that we see on Ashton street every weekday morning.

I fully support this petition and implore Waverley council to take the concerns of residents seriously. Option 2 is the safest solution for our street community however understand the challenges this may pose. An alternative may be to introduce a no left turn at peak times of the day similarly to the no right turn at Ruthven. Surely the same consideration given to Ruthven St resident concerns should be granted for Ashton St?

The speed at which some drivers travel down Ashton Street on weekday school runs means an accident occuring is no longer a case of "if" but "when?" I prefer option 2 but fear that local government ianction will leave blood on many hands...

With ever increasing local traffic, and expansion of local schools, either measure would be sensible.

Fully support this proposal as we have two young children and worry about unsafe driving on our street. Preference for creating a cul de sac, because the high speed "short cut" drivers aren't limited to a certain time of day so we need a permanent solution.

Helen Aroney-Moustacas & James Moustacas No 43 We fully support action be taken to slow the traffic in Ashton Street. Option 2 is probably the only way the traffic will be limited as people use our street as a short cut after coming down Ruthven Street as well as all the parents waiting to collect or drop off children. However this will create a new problem at the York Road and Birrell Street intersection and traffic will build up and we won't be able to turn right into Birrell Street.

Thank you Paul for starting this petition. As a resident of Ashton Street for 14 years with 3 children walking to school/ public transport daily the increase in traffic, particularly in the mornings, has been noticeable and of great concern. I am open to trialling Option 1 but realise we will initially need a vigilant police presence to enforce the change. If this proves unsuccessful then I support Option 2..

Please stop cars speeding down Ashton St. Just a sign with a low sped limit won’t achieve this. It is ignored or disregarded. Thankyou

We support the street closure at the junction of York Rd, but would not want police cars parked in the street regularly looking to book innocent people for turning left off Birrell St.

We have three children and the street is full of resident children please do not wait until a accident occurs to take action.

I strongly support this petition and thank Mr Paul Glasson for his initiative. I support the comments of the other signatories & would like to add that, in addition to the danger of speeding vehicles, the repeated heavy acceleration & braking, contributes to both air & noise pollution, with proven negative effects on the physical & mental health of residents. Thus, I favour Option 2, effectively converting Ashton Street to a cul de sac, as I feel option 1 will be unenforceable and regularly flouted.
