They actually said yes to the monument and I honestly still feel like I might be dreaming about the whole thing. It is wild to think about how this started as a random thought after reading an old magazine article and now we are really going to have a tribute …

Attention: Edmonton City Council

We, the undersigned, are aware of the historical cultural significance SCTV had to the City of Edmonton.

In the early '80s, Edmonton was the base for one of the most influential comedy series on television.

We would like to see it recognized in the form of a monument to be erected somewhere in the city limits. We feel it would give Edmonton a unique attraction and signify the city's acknowledgment of its pop-culture status.

This petition was inspired by Avenue magazine's January 2012 cover story, "Made in Melonville." To read the article, plus our plea for an SCTV monument, click here:

Updates

January 5, 2012

I have been staring at the city council website all afternoon trying to figure out who exactly handles public art requests because it turns out there are a lot of departments involved in this stuff. It feels a bit like navigating a labyrinth but people keep messaging me with these wild memories of staying up late to watch the sketches and that keeps me going since the history here is so good.

I was looking at the list of names and it really hit me how many people still hold those old Melonville memories so close to their hearts. It feels like the city is finally waking up to the fact that this piece of comedy history is ours to claim if we really push for it.

SCTV IS LEGENDARY. Edmonton needs to own this history instead of ignoring it.
