Dr. Lunsford and Dr. Pierce:

We are respectfully requesting an open meeting with you and interested parties (faculty, students, alumni, community members, etc.) to discuss the current situation facing the Theatre Arts Department and the use of our new Thomas Black Box Theatre. We are also distressed and discouraged by the condition of our current facilities (Owen, Spilman, and McConnell) and the inherent danger many of those facilities present. We deserve better. We have long anticipated a new black box theatre where we can work and learn, and are very discouraged that we may have t vacate for several weeks each semester so the space can be used for storage of textbooks. Please let us know when a meeting can be arranged. Thanks you for your time.

Updates

I have been spending my time in the theatre storage areas taking photos of the conditions that make it impossible for us to learn safely. Silence from the administration is becoming the standard response but your stories keep me motivated to push for the meeting we deserve.

Seeing this level of support confirms that I am not the only one frustrated by the dangerous state of our current classrooms. This momentum proves that students and alumni value our craft enough to demand the space we were promised.

It's ridiculous that the school paid for a million dollar building... and no one thought of a storage closet for textbooks given to us that we aren't allowed to keep. (Even though tuition went up so that the school could purchase all of these books).

I did not donate to the theatre building project so that it could be used to store textbooks, even for a "short" time. There must be another place on campus to store books that won't interrupt anyone.

Black box theatre spaces provide unique perspective for young and inquisitive artists. Take the storage somewhere else. Show these students that arts education matters by giving space to play and create.

I'm a MHC Theatre Arts Graduate who has been a working actor for thirty years and this is appalling. The space to make theater is essential. My memories of working at MHC still inspire me to this day. Please allow present and future artists to be inspired too. Free the Thomas Black Box Theater for the Theater Students.

You wouldn't store text books in a chemistry lab. A theater is not a storage room. It's a useful facility for future professionals.

This is unconscionable! As a Mars Hill alum, you always want the students who came after you to have it better than you did. Even though they have the facility, they aren't allowed to use it? Are they supposed to be grateful? Please find somewhere else to store those text books. Even if it's underneath the cafeteria.

As an alumna of the theatre program @ MHC (now MHU), I am signing this petition in support of accessibility, using all theatre spaces for their intended uses, and trandperency for any delicious made to change existing plans. Honor your original plans and promises.
