University of Maryland Eastern Shore is an institution founded on the principles of equality and black excellence. The students of UMES are not awarded many options for recreational activities, in fact the only place for students to pursue any form of athletic pastime is Tawes gym. Many of UMES students enjoy shooting hoops in the gym in between classes, others use the weight rooms and exercise machines in order to maintain physical fitness, not to mention many students enjoyed the weekly student facilitated intramurals basketball games. For the past two weeks Tawes gymnasium has been closed due to repairs, and no communication has been relayed to the students as to when the gym will be reopened for use. The students of UMES are requesting that they be allowed to use the gym facilities in Hytche. Students have unfairly been barred from using Hytche gym contrary to the fact that we pay a hefty amount in athletic fees every semester, not to mention this university should be geared towards catering to the students and their needs. We as students, are more than understanding that Tawes gymnasium (being one of the oldest buildings on campus) needs work, but we are not accepting of the blatant disregard to the needs of the student population. Once again, the students of University of Maryland Eastern Shore are requesting the use of Hytche Gymnasium until Tawes gymnasium is reopened.

Updates

April 8, 2015

I have been walking past Hytche every day this week and seeing it sit completely empty while we have nowhere to go is getting harder to stomach. I am currently putting together a formal request to the athletic department to demand an explanation for why our fees are being collected for facilities we are explicitly forbidden from using.

Seeing the campus rally together like this proves that we are tired of paying for facilities we cannot even access. This momentum shows the administration that our physical health and our time on this campus are not things to be ignored.

I definitely agree! It's not fair that the regular students can't work out at this time but athletes can. When a basketball player broke the backboard, we couldn't work out but he probably continued to work out. We should have access to a gym

the government paid for tawes gym, and I pay athletic fees, so if my money isn't going to tawes it must be going to Hyche. why then, can't I use that gym?

The fact that we get charged athletic fees & still not able to use Hytche because Tawes is being fixed is just sad and ridiculous. We need to step up and fight for what is ours. enough is enough

I agree! We pay just as much as other schools to have facilities such as tawes. We pay almost $1,000 each year to be able to use the gym. If something that we pays for will not be open for our use then there should be an alternative. Just as they did when Wilson was under construction. Especially with all the rain this week, we need options.

I agree that there has been a blatant disregard for the the needs of the University's students. First of all the closing of Tawes in general was unknown to students until after the fact. Plus the first email stated that the workers would be done in a couple of days, then another email claimed it was just another week. It is now going on 3 weeks and it seems to me that the work will most likely not even be done until the semester is over. All I ask is for this school to take responsibility of the situation and give the requested needs to us the students, because isn't this part of what we paid for?
