Recently a proposal was approved to take a student organization that has had a presence at SIU as well as WSIU for the past 11 years and move them from their current office (Room 1011A in the Comm. Building) into the basement. The basement facility would consist of two small editing bays, totaling to less than half the size of their current office. The area of the basement that these rooms are in are cramped, unfinished, dilapidated spaces off the beaten path and are often noisy and have been known to flood. alt.news 26:46 is a growing organization and has been expanding since its creation in 1998. Every year, this group gets new equipment and has a working staff of 10-12 people and a volunteer crew of 40-50 people. The rooms they would be moved to would only have space for a maximum of 4 stations. There are times where all of the 10-12 staff members are working at once and this is necessary for content to get done on time. This smaller space would not be efficient enough to produce a monthly half hour news program. Please help us keep our current space or find an alternative that wouldn’t hurt the continuing growth of alt.news 26:46 as well as student involvement in extracurricular activities.
I have been spending my nights gathering floor plans and comparing our current office to the cramped basement facility they propose for us. The administration has stayed quiet regarding my requests for a formal meeting but I am preparing a full report on why this move will halt our production entirely.

Seeing this level of support for the program proves that our work in that office carries real weight. I spent so many late nights in that room learning how to tell stories and knowing that so many others value this space gives me the strength to fight for our home.

Fix the basement first if you really want to put people down there. Otherwise leave them where they are.

This is just ridiculous. Why move a successful org to a place that floods? Talk about setting them up to fail.

alt.news is a staple here. Stop pushing out the students who actually do something with their time.
