I would like to propose that the rule regarding Beacon Green's 'no dogs allowed' be lifted for community events.

There are many dog owners in Sutton Upon Derwent now and I feel that a large proportion of us, do not like to leave our pets behind for any length of time. However, we do like to support community events on Beacon Green and the Village Hall. All I ask, is that we are able to bring our dogs onto this communal area, to enjoy the events which have been arranged for the residents of the villager. I am not asking for this to be a park for dogs to use routinely, only for events.

This would apply to responsible dog owners, who pick up dog waste immediately as should be the case in all areas, paths public walk ways etc. Also, I would like to be clear, that this applies to well behaved dogs. Nobody wants unruly dogs near children or anyone else for that matter.

I have researched other villages in the surrounding area, i.e. Elvington, Newton Upon Derwent, Wilberfoss, Pocklington & Barmby Moor. Non of these villages ban dogs from going to Village events or going on communal areas. The dog waste clearing up is a given. it is the law that we should pick up their poos or a fine is payable.

At the moment, we dog owners feel under attack and discriminated against by the Sutton Upon Derwent Parish council, having been thrown off the last event. Then having the council put a patronising notice on Facebook, followed by plastering the notices throughout the village! The sarcasm within the text of that notice was palpable and resonated around the people who own dogs in this village. The council seem to miss the point, perhaps they don't think we walk our dogs? I was approached by a number of people asking if I could do anything about it, so this is the route I am taking.

There is a need for change and I hope you will agree with me and sign this petition, even if you are not a dog owner. Our pets are a part of our family!

Thank you
