It has come to our attention that our children are still wearing masks outside during recess and during class time when they are maintaining social distance of 3 feet. The Superintendent’s letter last week clearly outlined that mask wearing is only required indoors when social distancing of 3 feet cannot be maintained. It also supported that children do not have to wear masks outside during recess or PE activities.
Additionally , many of our children are placed in desks with at least 3 feet maintained already.
Mask wearing imposes significant social and emotional health challenges to our children. The inability to see facial expressions clearly creates a barrier to a healthy social and educational environment. We strongly urge you to consider revising the policy at Mercy to align with the diocese. Several other diocese schools have been following the diocese.
It’s time to let our children be children again.

Really support doing away with masks outside. We have been dealing with Covid in our household and thankfully our children did not spread Covid to our OLM family. Neither did our K4 child...who is not masked, ever, at her school. So thankful, but I did expect that my youngest would have spread Covid due to them not masking...but the results were the same under both circumstances.
Facial expressions are needed to communicate appropriately. Bright smiles make happy hearts!
