Final supporters
We are an eighth grade class at Gruening Middle School in Eagle River, Alaska. We are doing Project Citizen and have chosen the state budget as our topic. Project Citizen is a national civics competition, which teaches students how to create or change a public policy. We have chosen the state budget as our issue and have done extensive research on the topic and have studied the state budget and the crisis involved with it.
We have established that Alaska has many problems with the budget and have come to conclusion that we should do these three policies.
- E- cigs should be taxed as a tobacco product
- PFD should be capped at $800 with remaining interest used towards the state’s general fund
- Add a low level income tax implemented in one to two years

I am honestly a bit overwhelmed by the attention this project is getting because I never imagined so many people would take an interest in our classroom efforts. You all have taken these ideas further than we ever dreamed possible. This momentum belongs entirely to the people who took a moment to listen to us.

Eagle River represent. Kids these days actually doing something about the budget mess is refreshing
what about the PFD amount though. 800 seems low?

E cigs definitely need a tax. Good work staying on top of issues that actually matter
