XXX Address Public Health Concerns At Seattle, Washington's Greenwood/Licton Springs Homeless Encampment
Our Greenwood/Licton Springs Homeless Encampment is opening in March at 8620 Nesbit Avenue N. The mayor established this encampment site unilaterally, by executive order, in December, 2016. The site will serve approximately 70 residents with active addictions and/or "behavior problems." Local media report that residents will not be allowed to use substances on-site. It is expected, therefore, that this will occur off-site, i.e., in surrounding neighborhoods.
The mayor and city council must have a concrete plan of action in place before opening to safely serve the encampment residents and maintain the safety and livability of the Greenwood/Licton Springs Neighborhood.
Residents with addictions and/or behavior problems require:
- A safe on-site place to use substances (rather than planning for use in the community).
- Safe on-site disposal of syringes and other drug paraphernalia (to prevent disease spread via improper on-site disposal, and prevent disposal in surrounding neighborhoods).
- Increased social services and a stronger community policing presence (to prevent increased drug-related crimes and violence on-site and in surrounding neighborhoods).
- Medical intervention planning for drug overdoses.
- Recycling collection and adequate trash cans.

I checked the screen and suddenly realized the sheer weight of people backing this plan for the neighborhood and honestly it makes my head spin a little because maybe the mayor will finally have to listen to us now. It is wild to see this much traction when I started this just feeling totally ignored and frustrated by the lack of any real safety strategy for Nesbit.

Please keep the focus on supporting and humanizing people who are currently homeless and have the illness of addiction, providing them with the services they need (rather than making this about increased policing).
This is common sense. People who are homeless still need basic services. Safe injection procedures, safe disposal, and basic sanitation are all exactly that - basic. For the homeless community and the Greenwood community, do the right thing and step up with the services that this encampment needs to be safe.
I live on Nesbit and this is unacceptable. I have already seen drug deals everyday in front of my house and my husband are trying to start a family. I've had my window broken and car broken into. All this with no homeless encampment.
One element is absent. The social/health services and drug/alcohol rehab support should be housed VERY near the encampment - within 3-8 city blocks - so there are not physical, financial, or psychological barriers to support.
The new Jr.High at Licton Springs is just a few blocks away, this is injurious planning to build a behavior problem known camp and put our middle school that will draw from many neighborhoods together. Please use better foresight.
Please take these basic steps to ensure the community is not negatively impacted by this encampment, especially for the safety of the school grounds and the young children who walk to school.
These are bare-minimum necessary measures for the well-being of all.

I live around the corner from this empty lot and if this goes in I wil be moving and I will be taking the 3 businesses I own with me, out of the city. We already deal with high levels of crime, drug use, trash, dirty needles, prostitution, homelessness, stealing with little to no police present.
