We, the students at Heartland, respectfully request a larger variety of classes and activities be available at the Pontiac Center. The Pontiac Center is an extension of Heartland’s main campus but we do not feel as if we are part of a whole. With the limited amount available to us, we feel a lack of interest in the continuance of our education.

We urge Heartland’s Vice President for Learning and Student Success to consider the following:

• Lack of transportation is a real problem for students. Many who struggle financially do not have their own cars and are not capable of driving to main campus in Bloomington. Parents and friends often work in the Pontiac area, which makes carpooling to the Pontiac Center much easier.
• In order to attend classes at main campus, an entire day must be taken off from work as opposed to the few hours when attending classes in Pontiac. Job schedules are rigid and employers are not always willing to alter them for one employee.
• By not allowing instructors to teach all they are qualified for, valuable resources are being wasted. With these restrictions in place, we feel as if we are not getting all the opportunities possible.

The students of Heartland are not asking for an entirely new set of classes. Instead, we ask you to consider making available a wider range of classes encompassing more than just the Gen Eds and activities at the Pontiac Center.
