This is an essential step to take with regard to abattoirs. Cash for 'meat' must stop. A paper trail will make the theft of horses much less attractive.

if abattoirs insisted on the correct paperwork there wouldnt be the opportunity for scumbags to make a quick buck & it would save a lot of horses.Makes me wonder why we wrre made to have passports.
For all the lost ones, we need to make people accountable for the horses/ponies they send to slaughter. Too many horses/ponies are being stolen and sold for meat, this must stop. Making people provide proof ownership would go a long way to stopping or greatly reducing thefts if those stolen animals were rendered valueless.
Great idea. Paperwork trail will help end stolen horses for meat cash. Stolen horses should not end up here as they are pets and are loved. Some have been on long term medication. But who knows what gets through. Tesco didn't!
Totally agree with the need to make abattoirs but also companies exporting of horses accountable to avoid stolen horses entering meat trade
THIS... is a 'no brainer' . . let alone recent scandals regarding 'horse burgers' .. dealing in horse meat should be tracable, and failing traceability, made a criminal offence.

Why all equines aren't chipped like our domestic dogs and cats is beyond me, they should all be traceable and slaughter houses should not accept them with out the correct paperwork although how they would action that is debatable.
