WHAT ABOUT US?
The Board of CFI has decided to break relations with our existing Local and create its own Local. It is about to enter into separation negotiations. This will take considerable investment of time and resources, and promises to distract your leadership from issues that affect you directly.
- How does a split benefit us?
-Has there been a cost-benefit analysis?
-What.are the implications of losing our Local's know-how and support?
-Does the general membership have a say before we embark on separation negotiations?
-It's our union. Why haven't we been asked?
WE ARE CONCERNED:
Region 1 has not had a raise in over 6 years. We interpreters are the ONLY employees in ALL LASC that have not received ANY raises in this time. We are the ONLY interpreters statewide not to have received ANY bonus or raise. NO bargaining dates have been set. NO discussion or analysis on how to break the gridlock with administration. Until today, NO mention of R1 bargaining in ANY CFI communucations.WHY?

- Rethink your priorities: REVITALIZE our negotiations' process.
- SLOW DOWN. We need time to analyze AND VOTE on the judiciousness of such a split.

The silence from the board is honestly deafening even though I keep checking my inbox every ten minutes for some kind of response. People have been reaching out to me privately about the lack of raises and it just confirms we really need to pause this whole split thing until someone actually listens to us for once.

I really did not think we would see this kind of turnout so quickly but it just shows how frustrated everyone is with these backroom decisions. It is wild to see so many names popping up because it proves we are not alone in wondering why we are being kept in the dark about our own future.

Before CFI makes any moves or changes in its structure, it is only fair for us as members to be able to see a complete overview and an objective evaluation of the pros and cons of said changes and moves.
Just today, we got an email from Silvia Barden mentioning Region 1 negotiations. To little, too late! Also, she wanted to clear up the "false rumors" that the courts wanted to do away with F status. Those false rumors were STARTED by Silvia and Mike Ferreira six months ago at a general meeting. I asked them to clarify at that time and they refused. There's no way I want them and their ilk running my union!
Yes, let us put these important moves by the CFI to a vote. That sounds like a true democracy.
CFI has never mobilized or organized it's own members, even when the members themselves would like to get involved. Santa Barbara has always been an afterthought to LA's needs. WHY DO I PAY DUES? They have never answered that question, except to invite me to disassociate myself. Even if I did, they would still take my dues!
CFI should concentrate its resources on putting money into the pockets of its members,. The cost of living in Los Angeles County and other big cities in the state is much too high relative to the current interpreter earnings
Just to clarify, again: I am RETRACTing my vote on this petition. I agree with forming an interpreter local within our union. CWA is a great union, by the way; it just has to make room for us as a profession, not just represent us in groups mixed in with journalists and phone workers.
Hi, everyone. I would like to clarify my position on this petition. I am FOR forming an interpreter local. Why? Precisely because I am tired of this stupid pickering between us, interpreters who know our sitution and want to fight for a raise and against VRI - and other general union members whose priorities lie in their own professions. I am for interpreters knowledgeable about our needs and our situation to be the ones to fight directly for our raises, our rights and our increases in benefits. It's just an adjustment in our approach, but still towards the same goal we all want, and Guess what?! -- it has already worked! In Costra Costa County interpreter negotiators acting directly won interpreters there a $2500 bonus and two successive 2% raises on top of each other. There is a compelling, if lengthy, discussion of this by Camille Taiara who was a well known journalist turned interpreter It can be found at http://www.calinterpreters.org/open-letter-from-camille-t-taiara/ We need an interpreter unit - an interpreter "local" - to fight for a raise and to prevent court administrations from using Virtual Remote Interpreting,which amounts to "outsourcing" our jobs to call centers at a cheaper price for the courts. This has been the trend in all professions in the last two decades.Recent experience in other fields show this type of "outsourcing" just brings about loss of jobs and lower benefits. Just like the big companies outsource their customer service calls to the Phillipines or Jamaica or wherever they can get cheaper operators, so i believe the courts in California will try to do the same with us,trying to get the cheapest price for court interpreting by phone or internet to do the work we do in the courtroom. Most of us know reporters who have lost their jobs in the realignment, due in part to the use of tape recording formerly reported courtroom proceedings. benefits.
