Just to clarify, again: I am RETRACTing my vote on this petition. I agree with forming an interpreter local within our union. CWA is a great union, by the way; it just has to make room for us as a profession, not just represent us in groups mixed in with journalists and phone workers.

Hi, everyone. I would like to clarify my position on this petition.
I am FOR forming an interpreter local. Why? Precisely because I am tired of this stupid pickering between us, interpreters who know our sitution and want to fight for a raise and against VRI - and other general union members whose priorities lie in their own professions. I am for interpreters knowledgeable about our needs and our situation to be the ones to fight directly for our raises, our rights and our increases in benefits.
It's just an adjustment in our approach, but still towards the same goal we all want, and Guess what?! -- it has already worked! In Costra Costa County interpreter negotiators acting directly won interpreters there a $2500 bonus and two successive 2% raises on top of each other. There is a compelling, if lengthy, discussion of this by Camille Taiara who was a well known journalist turned interpreter It can be found at

We need an interpreter unit - an interpreter "local" - to fight for a raise and to prevent court administrations from using Virtual Remote Interpreting,which amounts to "outsourcing" our jobs to call centers at a cheaper price for the courts. This has been the trend in all professions in the last two decades.Recent experience in other fields show this type of "outsourcing" just brings about loss of jobs and lower benefits.
Just like the big companies outsource their customer service calls to the Phillipines or Jamaica or wherever they can get cheaper operators, so i believe the courts in California will try to do the same with us,trying to get the cheapest price for court interpreting by phone or internet to do the work we do in the courtroom. Most of us know reporters who have lost their jobs in the realignment, due in part to the use of tape recording formerly reported courtroom proceedings. benefits.

I'm very concerned about this situation. I'm in region 4 but I think we should concentrate on negotiations not all this internal disputes.

Yes, let us put these important moves by the CFI to a vote. That sounds like a true democracy.
i would suggest to all of you to leave your f's and confortable a's status and become independent contractors, or to return as a symbol your earnings from yout retirement accounts that CFI got you. then you might ask yourself what do you do to improve thr situation if it s so bad? be more constructive and treat your anger with a therapist

I am not 100% suer what the purpose of this petition is, but I do want to go on record on saying that it is time for CFI to get out of business of telling anyone what to do, or to presume to speak for the court interperters of region 1. Their incompetence and arrogance is appalling and embarrassing. They should be pushing dirt farmers around in a banana republic or something. The second priority is to get rid of that horrible, useless union. Both of these organizations are blood sucking leeches who grow fat on our dues and belch when they are full. We need to get rid of both of them NOW

The union needs to work for the interpreters, sounds cliche but they need to work for us "the people", our primary concern is to see a true result from negotiations. We need a raise.

We need a careful and level headed review of this decision before we embark ok this new adventure I'am not happy at all with this union but you need to foresee the repercussions with this move before .

CFI has never mobilized or organized it's own members, even when the members themselves would like to get involved.
Santa Barbara has always been an afterthought to LA's needs. WHY DO I PAY DUES? They have never answered that question, except to invite me to disassociate myself. Even if I did, they would still take my dues!

CFI should concentrate its resources on putting money into the pockets of its members,. The cost of living in Los Angeles County and other big cities in the state is much too high relative to the current interpreter earnings
