What better way to build community than a community park. A place to gather, socialize, get fit, build community ties, increase safety and awareness. With childhood obesity growing at an alarming rate in San Mateo County, we need to utilize our shared resources and partner with our neighbors to come out of our homes to ensure a legacy of healthy minds and bodies.
- Community Parks increase property values
- South San Francisco has the highest rate of Childhood obesity / overweight children in all of San Mateo County
- Sunshine Gardens is only one of two neighborhoods without a public park
- Public Parks encourage strong communities, strong families and safer neighborhoods
- High density housing will increase the number of residents in Sunshine Gardens from 7,500 to 8,200 with no public park for its residents.
- 20% of the population in SSG are children ages k-12*
Sunshine Gardens Elementary school 11.5 acres of land in the heart of a land locked neighborhood. Most of this land is unused and poorly maintained. Other School owned property has successfully been converted to public use while owned by the district and yet managed by the City. With a shared use policy, we can build neighborhood facility that could be utilized by all citizens regardless of age, race, ethnicity and ability. Help us by encouraging the SSFUSD and the City of SSF to work together to build a park in Sunshine Gardens. The feedback from local residents continues to confirm that our shared lack of outdoor space is a significant concern for the neighborhood. I have begun drafting formal correspondence to district officials to request a discussion regarding the potential for a shared use agreement on the elementary school property.

It is a shame our city government chooses to ignore the important quality of life issues in favor of more unneeded housing development projects. I do not believe it is a matter of lack of funding given all of the large corporate entities in Biotech that are contributing to our tax base. Our Mayor and City Council should support providing a Community Park for the families in Sunshine Gardens
Instead of worrying about building more developments and cramming more people into our city, and favoring the biotech with their lovely landscaping, let's start focusing some attention on the neighborhoods.
There has to be a way to put a park here in SSG. I’ve lived here for 42 years raised 4 kids and now have grandchildren. We need some place for kids to play.
We need a small park around the Sunshine Garden. The residents are getting old and cannot walk on steep streets or far away to Orange Park. The Elementary School doesn’t need such a humorous space for a small student body. Would the City Council contact negotiate with the School Board o this issue?
I believe it would be nice but should maybe be gated n closed after dark hrs so on one thinks it can be a over night hang out place.. while open in the day time to the public with maybe workout theme steps also kinda like oyster point trail.. hope to see a community park that promotes a safe place families can come together n have nice time out with their kids

Born and raised in Sunshine Gardens of South San Francisco. As a child I had no public parks in my neighborhood to ride bikes to. We did have the local schools that were usually gated off or we were guided off property by the after hours staff, typically resorting to hanging out in vacant store lots or utility easements. A local park would be great for the neighborhood!
