Renato "Rene" Mendoza began his tennis career in the Philippines. Rene and his wife, Sandy, moved to Woodlake with their two children in 2000. He began teaching at Woodlake 10 years ago as an assistant pro and is a certified USPTR pro. He took over as Tennis Director in 2015, with great enthusiasm and support from the Woodlake tennis community.

Since his arrival at Woodlake, Rene has been a force of positive changes at the SRC and within the tennis program. Rene took it upon himself to improve the condition of the courts, and under his guidance and direction, they have gone from having a reputation as one of the worst kept Har-tru courts in Richmond, to one of the best. His lessons, clinics, and programs, for both adults and juniors, are always fun and educational. Many of us parents and our children have benefited greatly from his instruction. Since starting here in 2000, Rene has become the teaching pro of choice for many of us, due to his enthusiasm, ability to make it fun and high level of instruction. More recently, Rene has shown his ability to work cooperatively with the Woodlake Tennis Association and their many volunteers to make our tournaments more enjoyable and fun for everyone.

We, the undersigned, come to you, the Woodlake Community Association, in unison, on behalf of Rene Mendoza. We are a tennis community… a tennis family, and as such we bring to you this petition of support for Rene Mendoza as Director of Tennis at Woodlake Swim and Racquet Club.

It's because of Rene's hard work that the clay courts are in great shape and worth playing on. For many years, the courts were not maintained properly and were an embarrassment for USTA play hosted at Woodlake. Rene has the respect and support of Men's tennis at Woodlake.

I'm fully supporting Rene. He is great coach and introduced my two sons to tennis. The older one is doing great at high school tennis team - he wouldn't be there without Rene. The younger one is stepping the same path. For them, tennis at Woodlake = Rene.

Rene was the person that got me back into tennis after 14 years and his example got me to join the club. Since I started working in DC, I have considered joining another club. I stayed with Woodlake because of Rene. If he doesn't come back, I will most likely join a northern VA club.

Rene taught me as to play tennis as adult and fostered my love of tennis. His brings a mix of patience and a wonderful sense of humor to each lesson. He is a most valuable asset to the Woodlake community and it would be a huge loss to lose him!

Rene is the sole reason we are members of the SRC. Since the first time we came up to the courts many years ago, Rene has been there. A steady, constant, welcoming presence. He actually cares, not only about the club, but the people.

Rene has been my coach since I started playing tennis and is a great role model. I would love to see him stay and I couldn't see Woodlake tennis the same without him.
