Sailing has been part of Cultus Lake life for over 100 years. It is an environmentally -friendly sport, with participants of all ages.
The Cultus Lake Sailing Club is a non-profit society, operated by unpaid volunteers. It operates under the oversight of provincial, national and international Sailing bodies. The Club provides "Learn to Sail" programs , offers a sailboat co-op to members, and hosts recreational and competitive Sailing events.
The Club pays the Park Board to occupy a spot on the Sunneyside campgrounds and for a storage shed. Until this year, the combined costs were set at an reasonable level, and increased about 2 % per year. On average, after paying the yearly costs, the Club broke even.
This year, the Park Board proposed a 550 % increase. This will make it impossible for the Club to continue operating. Additionally, with 6 weeks' notice, the Park Board told the Club to vacate the Park by August 22nd.

I have been spending my mornings at the shore watching the kids learn to rig their boats and it breaks my heart to think this might be our final season. We are still waiting for a response from the Park Board regarding our request for a meeting to discuss these unsustainable costs. Your stories about learning to sail here keep me motivated to fight for the future of our club.

Seeing this kind of backing for our club leaves me genuinely overwhelmed. I grew up on these waters and watching our community rally to protect this space reminds me exactly why we started this fight in the first place.

550% increase is straight up robbery. Leave the sailing club alone, they have been there forever!
My kids learned to sail there. It is such a great program for the community and keeps the lake active and safe. Dont ruin this.
