To the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island:
Whereas traffic volumes on the Trans Canada Highway are high and likely to increase; and,
Whereas children and parents should have safe routes to facilities such as school and daycare; and,
Whereas there are no other options available to calm traffic such as a turning lane or reduced speed zone; and,
Whereas a safer option exists for an alternative access to Merry Pop-Ins Childcare Centre,
We, the undersigned, residents and concerned citizens of Prince Edward Island, petition the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island to request that immediate steps be taken to ensure safe driving conditions to and from Merry Pop-Ins Childcare Centre for the benefit of patrons, staff, visitors, and the community by,
*extending the proposed cul-de-sac at Tobin Road to include the parking lot of Merry Pop-Ins Childcare Centre; and
*installing traffic medians as deemed appropriate to divide Trans Canada Highway traffic from the cul-de-sac and parking lot.

I really never thought this would gain this much steam when I typed it up that first night at my kitchen table while the coffee was going cold. Seeing people actually jump on board like this feels wild because it reminds me that I am definitely not the only one staring at those cars on the highway and feeling like my heart is going to stop. It just feels like we have some actual legs to go somewhere now.

Anyone who has ever tried to access Merry Pop-Ins from the road, from either direction, knows how treacherous the entry is. This is a golden opportunity for the Department of Transportation to modify access to the daycare centre when they are already making modifications to the TCH in the same area!
People live near these roads, and planners need to take their experience and their voices into account. Islanders having well-thought-out concerns (and possible solutions) about highway projects being totally brushed aside by the Transportation Department officials -- a distressing pattern on PEI.
Let's no endanger our children by making an unsafe turn off into a daycare centre. A simple fix is possible, extending the road that will be a part of route 10...which already will have to be extended to accomodate residents.
My daughter and grandson go in and out of this preschool every day and I would like to know that they are able to do this safely.
For being proactive in our community and as parents, it is imperative that we voice our concerns and that government seriously look at options that could alleviate traffic congestion and possible chance of accidents and fatalities involving families.
The safety of 'children and their parents' should be the first concern in every situation so PEI Government please listen to, and act on the valid concerns of this group.

I thought the TCH "improvements" were "all about safety" - so surely it's a no-brainer to give the daycare a safe access area away from the highway. .......
