Dear Portage Park and Old Irving Park Neighbors,

As many of you may know by now, our beloved, European-style, mom and pop, local market is in the process of going out of business. Many of us are very sad about this and want to encourage the owners to reconsider. If The Family Fruit Market has made an impact on your life and the way you shop, please sign this petition to keep the market in the neighborhood.

We are not only taking our situations into consideration, but also the people who work there! Many of the employees live and want to continue working in the neighborhood. If it stays, it can only benefit everyone.

Thanks for your participation and support!

I have been in direct contact with the ownership team to discuss the feedback expressed here. They are currently reviewing the concerns regarding the long-term viability of the shop. I will provide further information as those conversations progress.

From what the cashiers told me, the competition from Jewel, Mariano's and Walmart has just been too much for this little market. No one knows when it will close, and the owner seems to be conflicted and not very happy about the decision. Some of the employees will go to another family member's store that is opening in Evanston, but others cannot make the commute for various reasons. One cashier suggested that we include recommendations that would make the store more appealing. For example, including beer and wine and a more varied selection of products so that it could be a one-stop store like the bigger markets.

My one question is- do the owners want to close because they want to retire or move into a lifestyle that affords them more time for other pursuits? If they've simply had enough, shouldn't we respect that decision? I haven't spoken to them, so this is pure conjecture.

My family has been shopping here my whole life! (18+ years) and I would hate to see this store close down.
