The council finally agreed to fund school meals through the holidays. It has been a long and draining struggle but I am relieved that families will not have to worry about this during the break. Keep watching to ensure they follow through on this promise.

The Covid crisis has pushed many families over the brink into poverty and food insecurity.

In Wandsworth over 5,000 local children receive the lifeline of free school meals during the school term.

Wandsworth Labour believes no child should go hungry.

We, the undersigned, call on Wandsworth Council to ensure that there is an extension of free school meals for all eligible local children over the October half term and Christmas holiday.

The emails I receive from families struggling to plan for the upcoming holidays are heavy to hold. I am spending my days pushing for meetings with the council while the silence from their office grows louder.

October 28, 2020

The days have been long and the opposition remains stubborn but we are nearing one thousand signatures. Please push this through your networks today because we need a clear signal to show the council that hunger cannot wait.

Lived in Wandsworth most of my childhood and had some friends who relied on school meals, it cannot be underestimated how important they are to some families, or how fortunate some of us are to not be dependant on them.

Free meal (vouchers) are a much more immediate way of ensuring that food gets to a hungry child, rather than the ponderous vehicle of Universal Credit. Any food parcels must contain only healthy foods - no crisps, chocolate etc. Proper food for brain and body!

If we can afford to eat out to help out, we can afford to stop children starving. The program is fit so purpose during term time and thus is also fit during the holidays. Take party politics and pride out of this, a mark of a civilised society is every citizen being fed, educated and housed.

If the government accepts it needs to feed children eligible for 195 days (39 wks) then what excuse not to provide them vouchers for the 65days of holidays and instead risks them going hungry against their human right.

As a secondary school teacher, this is near and dear to my heart. The past 6 months of lockdown have been tough for many and I think it is important that we do not let vulnerable children go hungry and further widen the poverty gap!

This is so so important. I cant for the life of me understand why anyone would vote no, child poverty is a real issue. Especially in poorer areas such as Roehampton and surrounding.
