The management at the Hale Koa Hotel has officially reversed their plan to use the volleyball courts as a staging area for construction equipment. These courts will remain open for our community to use throughout the upcoming renovations. Thank you for your commitment to preserving this essential public space.

KEEP FT. De Russy Volleyball courts Open
The Hale Koa Hotel is planning a year-long or longer renovation of the Barefoot Bar and pool areas starting in January 2018. However, the contractor is going to store its equipment on the two beach volleyball courts on the Hale Koa property, effectively closing the only two permanent courts in Waikiki for 2018.
This petition is also to prevent the permanent closure of the court forever.
These two volleyball courts are the home to a wonderful community of people. These volleyball courts are a safe and welcome environment place to a thousands of people including military personnel.
This is also an avenue for some of the military groups who utilize the volleyball games and exercises for health reasons.
Active, reserves, dependents of military of all branches from all over the world focus their vacation playing volleyball and hanging out at the courts. Many local military, residents and civilians also spend their holidays here. This is a special and unique family community. These courts are more than just a place to play beach volleyball. They are the hub of a close-knit community.
This community includies civilians, retirees, and many of those who served our country. this also help contribute to the Hale Koa revenue. They spend thousands of dollars at the the snack bars, Bibas Bar, Barefoot bar, luau and parking. Many of active duties military volleyball players play a big part of the revenue by choosing Hale Koa Hotel as their vacation accommodation.
Instead of storing equipment on the two courts, we are simply asking the Hale Koa and the contractor to find an alternative location for storage. There is ample underutilized space on the Hale Koa's 72-acre property that could be used without

The renovation plans remain a significant concern for our athletic community. I am currently coordinating with local stakeholders to ensure the value of these courts is understood by those overseeing the project.

I'm sure there are other areas to stage equipment, Ft. Derussy sand courts are so important to many, please consider alternative. On the positive side, could this be an opportunity to maybe revitalize the two courts??? Just a thought.
This is where I met my best friends when I moved to Hawaii and where I went to play and have fun every weekend. It has brought me so many memories and fun. The courts are not just courts, they are a home for locals and tourists where everyone is one ohana. Please find an alternative storage area!!
I have been going to these courts for the past 25 years. It would be a shame to have them be used as a storage spot for construction equipment instead of a nice safe effective place for some wholesome exercise.
I am the one responsible to over a thousand members of Fort DeRussy Beach Volleyball Page on Facebook and indeed, most of it's members are our close friends, locally and from all over the world. This is not just a venue to us, it is our 2nd home. PLEASE KEEP THE COURTS OPEN.
With recreational places being removed and limited, please do not take another one away.

Please don't close down these volleyball courts! Beach VB was one of the most watched sports during the Olympics. We are working to grow the game, there are great players coming out of Hawaii, and closing courts would be devestating.
