In a time of high gas prices and concern for better, more efficient travel plans, this petition is for the Lebanon Public Safety Committee to change Memorial Drive to allow traffic in both directions. Residents who live on Wolf Road are subject to an inefficient and inconvenient travel arrangement when they drive to work at the DHMC, shop at the Centerra business center, or visit Hanover. Currently, to reach any of these destinations, the residents of Wolf Road follow this route: 1. Drive all the way down Wolf Road, 2. At the end of Wolf Road, turn right onto Old Etna Road, 3. At the stop sign turn right onto Heater road (which becomes Mountain Support road), The current route is approximately 0.65 miles long depending upon the starting point. Memorial drive is approximately 0.13 miles long. It is a wasteful use of time and resources to live at the top of a hill, drive down the hill, and then drive back up the hill before making any progress in traveling for work or pleasure. There are also safety issues that need to be addressed. During the winter, the intersection of Wolf Road and Old Etna Road gets covered with ice and snow. This is very dangerous for drivers traveling down Wolf Road when they come to the stop sign and try to stop. Changing Memorial Drive to allow 2-way traffic provides an alternative that is much safer.
