Decision Makers: City of Sydney Council

To the General Manager and Councillors,

We, the undersigned residents, workers, and visitors, ask for an urgent revision of the newly released design for Town Hall Square before construction begins. This petition is made in good faith to help improve a vital public space, with no malice toward any councillor, council staff member, or planner.

Our concern is simple: the current layout leaves the square exposed to extreme heat and avoids basic bird-prevention measures. The design shows a vast area of open concrete with no permanent shade canopy. In the Australian summer, that kind of hard, uncovered surface will hold heat and make the square uncomfortable and unsafe for families, commuters, older people, and anyone trying to use the space during the day.

We are also concerned that the square sits directly opposite major food outlets, cafes, and central water sources, which will naturally attract pest birds. Without built-in prevention, the site is likely to become a high-traffic area for pigeons and other birds, bringing droppings onto seating, public paths, and outdoor dining areas. That is not just unpleasant; it is a hygiene issue and a poor outcome for a place meant to welcome the public.

We can already see nearby examples in Martin Place and the current Town Hall open public space. These show that this kind of problem is predictable and avoidable.

We therefore petition the Council to amend the project layouts to include permanent shade structures and proactive bird-prevention measures. Town Hall Square should be a clean, comfortable, and safe civic space for everyone.

There is a room for improvement in the city center and I think it’s over looked for a long time.
